Colour Gun - Interactive Art Project

Year: 2007

Artist: Paul Clay

Description:

Final Project for Interactive/Video Art class. Made using a laptop running Max/MSP/Jitter, a video camera, a projector, a wii remote, and sound editing programs. The program tracked the position of the people's heads using color tracking. The colorful blood was dynamically generated by the Jitter patch depending on where the head was. The direction of the spray depended on which side of the head the gun(wii remote with green flashlight attached) was shot. The audio is original.

 Questions:

What attracted you to this piece of interactive artwork in the first place?

What made me interested in this piece of interactive art is that it is very unique although it is only made by a bunch of student for their school project. The interesting part that i found is that when the gun is fired, it will seem as though colourful splash will come out from the user's head which can be seen on the projector screen.

How did you feel when you first saw this interactive art?

When i first saw the video, i was very amazed by the effects that they made to look as if the the gun can fire colourful splash or dots to make it look like blood coming out from the user's head. I was very amazed and it managed to open my eyes because it was quite interesting.

What element/s made this interactive art successful in engaging you?

The elements that made me interested with this interactive art is when the user interacts with the gun, a colourful splash which is made up of many colouful dots are projected on the screen. The sound effect also made the subject matter much more appealing.

What was the `wow' factor for you?

There are quite a few wow factor when i first saw this video of an interactive art, the first one is how the artist designed it to make it look as if the gun can project a colourful splash on the screen. Another wow factor that i found out after doing some research is that the interactive art is actually a class project which is done by some college students using a laptop running Max/MSP/Jitter, a video camera, a projector, a wii remote, and sound editing programs. This is a wow factor for me because these students managed to produce a simple but very unique and interesting interactive art that can catch not only the user but also the viewer's eyes.

If there is one thing that you want to add to this interactive artwork, what would it be?

I think that the changes that could be made to make this interactive artwork more interesting is by adding much more different styles and colours to the splash that comes out from the gun. For example, by adding real life effects such as real life looking blood or other splashes. Other than that, the sound effects that the gun emits when fired can also be changed to a more suitable sound such as the sound of a real gun when fired.
